Writer Wait is a quarterly literary experience dedicated to the craft of writing through conversation, storytelling, and creative reflection.
It is only the third quarter in the Writer Wait Universe and already it has received a major upgrade. It is an honor to share space with Ink and Soul Magazine and its blog, The Inkwell (refilling regularly), by continuing to provide stories, channeled messages and inspiring interviews in this new space.
As a self-proclaimed High Priestess (which is the card of the quarter), in a quarter beginning just before my calendar age of 35, I am pleased to give more insights into myself, my art, and The Writer Wait Universe (which is NOT just for writers).
Please enjoy this quarter’s “interview” which includes excerpts of the previous quarter’s works of fiction and an insight into the esoteric meaning behind the blog’s name.
Thank you for stopping by Writer Wait and a HUGE thank you again to the founders of Ink and Soul Magazine for granting me a room in their home.
Forever grateful,
K. N. Robertson
Author K. N. Robertson debuts rap skills by the pseudonym Robbie the Writer in her first single entitled "Witch of the South.” Stay tuned for excerpts from Fetal Fires, Hollow Heart, and the sequel to Exposing Lesser Demons as read by Robertson, as well as a lyric breakdown of an upcoming music project.
When Robbie the Writer show up it’s nicer. They should call me Robbie the Fae.
- To start, I would very much like this nickname to stick as I have always likened myself to a fairy, improving every place that I visit, and ideally, I would be unseen in the process, similar to a fairy or fae.A tough act to follow, you hatin you hollow cuz I make it look like a game.Do I think I’m a God? Well, I do have the power of Kali and Yah in my name.
- My real name is Khaliyah for those of you who do not know. It is derived from the Arabic name Khalid or Khalida, meaning friend of God.
- In Hindu culture there exists the Goddess of Destruction, Kali and an ancient Hebrew name for God is Yah or Yahweh, thus I have concluded that my name holds significant power. Many proper spells involve invocation of a God whose energy matches the frequency of the desired power behind the spell that is used. All words are spells. Your name is a spell. My name, I believe, must hold some added power having the combined invocation of these powerful entities.
For those who may have a difficult time believing in this concept, please consider for a moment how one might change their name upon finding a new faith. Example: Cassius Clay embraced the Muslim Faith and changed his name to Muhammed Ali. If names had no power, there would be no need to change it, but there is certainly power within a name. What stories do your name tell?
Tell the A Squad bring their A game cuz Robbie just raised the stakes.
- This one was rather unintentional but is perhaps a pleasant accident. As this song is in reference to the craft, I find it a curious thought that within these lyrics it is the witch who raises the stakes this time. As if you imply that the tables of old have turned even if only metaphorically. None shall burn to death literally, but any tool used as a weapon can be turned on its original user. This song can thus be considered a stake raised against those who once burned “witches” at the stake.
I’m a god ain’t no time for no wishin. I knew it was mine when I made the decision.
- We are all gods in the chrysalis; lower case ‘g’ gods. As a dear pastor (who coincidentally shares my last name) likes to say: “If your mother is God and your father is God then what does that make you?”
- I believe in the Law of Attraction as taught by Esther Abraham Hicks and I follow the wisdoms, as best I can, almost religiously. I do believe that we can have every single thing that we truly desire, even if we don’t always know what that is. It does require a decision, and sometimes that decision is to get off of the subject. Often that is how we can best get out of our own way and let the Universe work her magic. Other times, we know what we want, we know we can have it, and the decision can be to gently release doubt and fear as it comes. I discussed in the main video from this quarter how I really had to mark my territory on this beat or lose it to another artist…. I knew it was mine when I made the decision. I knew that I would have to bring the heat. The decision was made. Fear and doubt became unnecessary and the lyrics flowed easily. The confident delivery was a bit slower to arrive, but I held the KNOWING that this was my beat and that I had something to say on the track.
This is my game, there ain’t know competition. You might get the feature and pay for admission.
Come with talent, they trust the ambition. No company because I’m on a mission.
I got a long con. I can take the derision. I promise your chickens gon’ flock when I’m finished.
He fell in love when I came in the kitchen. She fell in love and I made her wash dishes.
- This section is an ode to kitchen witches. Many kitchen witches don’t even know that they are just that, but many of us let the ancestors guide us when we cook. It is delightful seeing this concept become increasingly popularized in a colloquial way that says to me that our people have been doing this for many lifetimes and now it’s openly becoming part of our language. Putting your soul into food is why the slaves' portions became coveted delicacies known as soul food. Food brings folks together and is the quickest way to someone’s heart. A witch can hide in plain sight if she does all of her potion brewing in the kitchen. Is it soup? Is it magic? Is there a difference?
Then I fixed her crown and I drowned with no witness.
All the players from the past come and beg for forgiveness.
I’m The Witch of the South better watch what I say.
- This could be taken as a threat, but in fact, I was saying I better watch what I say. Words are truly spells. As a matter of fact, the line before “all the players from the past come and beg for forgiveness,” was initially more like: “All the players from the past come to beg for forgiveness”, but then my ex called me THE SECOND I FINISHED THE LINE. I knew I had to change it. It was too powerful. I didn’t answer the phone. And I have ignored all of his attempts for communication ever since. I didn’t say all the exes. I said all the players. The Universe hath spoken. Which brings me to the next line:
I manifest what I put on the page.
- Need I say more? Yes, one more thing: The songs I have written since have been much more carefully crafted.
My pen is my sword and I write like a sage.
- The pen truly is mightier than the sword. The sword is swift, but a carefully worded couplet can bring a kingdom to its knees, especially when manifested with other people.
- About the word 'sword.' This begins an ode to tarot. The four suits include swords, wands, coins, and cups. Alternatively, when using a playing card deck spades replaces swords, clubs replace wands (though some practitioners will switch these two in rare cases – not me), diamonds represents coins (material), and cups are replaced by hearts as cups are the suit of emotion and love. In the next few lines I mention each suit, replacing cups with heart.
- About 'sage.' This and the following word ‘mint,’ are done as a play on each word. A sage is a wise person, but also a delicious herb that can be dried and used for spiritual cleansing, among other things. And mint (below) refers to being as good as money (minted, the U.S. mint, etc.), but again, a delicious herb with many magical associations like any herb (remember I said a witch can easily hide tools of the craft in the kitchen).
My lyrics are mint, so I always get paid.
- See what I did there?
Get what I want, and my word is my wand.
- Just another reminder, careful with those words.
Do what ye will unless it do harm.
- This line is from the Wiccan Rede. No need to fear a true witch because this line is law (unless you have harmed a Dianastic Witch, in which case beware because they believe it isn’t harm done if it is equivalent revenge). Some witches even believe that harm done comes back three-fold (Dianastic witches believe in being the vessel for that return). The Wiccan Rede is longer than this one line, but this is the crux of the Rede. I repeat: It is law.
Here is a joke for you: Why are witches so smart? Because the Wiccan Read (Rede; get it?)
Trust what I said cuz it came from the heart.
- 'Heart' because I have nothing to say about cups.
I see the future you already lost.
- I am so sorry, you have not lost. You can never get it wrong because it’s never done. But it rhymed and it was so important to me to put the words, “I see the future” in this song. The only way to lose is to be in opposition to another. But there is truly no competition. Abundance for all. Every time. Scarcity is a mindset. So too is abundance. Change the mindset, change the exterior world around you (As within so without – shoutout to last quarter’s card).
My pen is my coin, and it launched my career.
- That pen sure is powerful, ain’t it?
Swish of the ink make your ex disappear.
- Um, excuse me while I gush over my favorite line in this whole song. This might be the spell you hope I cast. I won’t harm your ex, but I will expel them from your perspective. Lol kidding (unless you want me to. No, seriously, kidding, but I could).
- Boy, I tell you that pen is mighty. But let’s not overlook the shoutout to stage magic with the idea of disappearing – and shortly after this – reappearing.
I’m on the beat so they like what they hear.
I spend a band make a band reappear.
- And that’s on manifesting (Which much of this song is about including aspects I did not highlight).
I hope you enjoyed this in depth look into the magical lyricism behind Witch of the South.
